Average Container Ship Capacity 2017-2023

This report tracks the size of container ships calling at U.S. ports from 2017 through 2023. For each Port and Coastal Region (Gulf, North Atlantic, North Pacific, South Atlantic, South Pacific), it reports the number of calls and the maximum, average, and median nominal capacity (TEU) of the calling fleet in each year. A national roll-up is also provided.

How to use it:
Use the average and median to gauge the typical ship size a port is attracting, and the maximum to see the largest class that called in a given year. Interpret results alongside call counts—smaller samples can shift the averages.

Notes:
Capacity reflects a vessel’s nominal TEU capacity (not loaded boxes) at the time of call. Figures summarize port calls by cellular containerships within the calendar year.
