K-12 Maritime Education Programs
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is responsible for ensuring mariners receive the training and education necessary to secure and strengthen the quality of U.S. maritime operations at sea and ashore. K-12 schools are integral in reaching and inspiring the next generation of mariners. MARAD works with schools, industry, and government partners to foster interest in maritime education and connect potential students with educational and training institutions.
Maritime K-12 education programs included here generally:
· Provide students with maritime skills that may lead directly to employment in the maritime industry or enable them to further their education at a maritime-oriented college or vocational/technical school;
· Offer courses taught by certified Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors in afloat and ashore career tracks and some combination of courses on general seagoing operations (e.g., deck, engineering, etc.);
· Position a student to earn credentials required to obtain afloat positions in the maritime industry, such as the Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). These credentials are valuable assets for those considering entry into a vocational or collegiate-level program, including one of the six State Maritime Academies and/or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Please contact MARAD’s Maritime Training and Education team at careersafloat@dot.gov if you would like us to consider adding your school’s program to this listing.
You can also explore the K-12 programs using our K-12 Maritime Education Interactive Map.

Marine Transportation: Students master sailing, navigation, boat-building, and seamanship through workshop instruction and sail training. Certifications include Red Cross CPR; First-Aid; and U.S. Coast Guard STCW through El Camino College.
Welding: In the maritime field, modern sailboats and yachts have many components that are made out of metal and, therefore, require welders to make the part and repair them (e.g. swim ladders, railings, pulpits, and rod holders). In addition, most vessels have metal hulls, and structural repairs require onboard welders. Many other waterfront elements require welders, including cranes, chassis, and pipes. Outside of the maritime field, welders are needed in the automotive, manufacturing, construction, and building industries. Students will become certified by the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) in Core Curriculum.
