2024-004-Southern Red Sea, Bab el Mandeb Strait, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean, Somali Basin, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Strait of Hormuz, and Persian Gulf-Threats to Commercial Vessels

This advisory supersedes and cancels U.S. Maritime Advisory 2024-001, incorporates new advice to U.S.-flagged vessels to turn off their AIS transponders when transiting the Southern Red Sea, Bab el Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden, highlights Houthi deceptive communications, provides information on the new Joint Maritime Information Center, and updates other threat info.

2024-001A-Red Sea and Gulf of Aden-Potential Retaliatory Attacks by Houthi Forces

At 2330 UTC on January 10th, coalition forces conducted strikes against targets used by Houthi rebels in Yemen to launch attacks against international shipping lanes and commercial vessels. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command recommends that U.S.-flagged commercial vessels remain North of 18N in the Red Sea or East of 46E in the Gulf of Aden for the next 72 hours. Further updates will be provided when available. This alert will automatically expire on Friday, January 19, 2024.

2023-008A-Arabian Sea-Boarding at Sea

A maritime incident has been reported in the Arabian Sea in the vicinity of 12-03N, 061-20E, approximately 700 miles east of Bossaso, Somalia, on Thursday, December 14, 2023. The incident has not been confirmed. The nature of the event is reported to be a boarding at sea. UKMTO incident report #478 has been issued at: Recent Incidents (ukmto.org). 2023-006A-Indian Ocean-Multiple

The Liberian flagged M/T CENTRAL PARK was boarded by unknown armed entities and subsequently released in the Gulf of Aden, 50 miles East of Djibouti, on November 26th, 2023. In addition, the Maltese flagged M/V CMA CGM SYMI was reportedly attacked by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Indian Ocean on November 24th, 2023. Exercise caution when transiting these areas and remain cognizant of evolving threats in this region. U.S. commercial vessels operating in these areas should review U.S.

2023-004A-Red Sea-Multiple Projectiles

There are reports that multiple drones and missiles were launched from Yemen into the Red Sea region on October 19, 2023. Exercise caution when transiting this area. U.S. commercial vessels operating in this area should review U.S. Maritime Advisory 2023-011 (Threats to Commercial Vessels – Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Bab al Mandeb Strait, Red Sea, and Somali Basin) for amplifying information and points of contact.
